Congratulations Dr Maree Madden: new ASLIA President

Deaf Australia wishes to congratulate the newly elected President of the Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association (ASLIA): Dr Maree Madden.

Deaf Australia and ASLIA have had a long history of collaboration to ensure that deaf people receive quality interpreters across many areas of life. With so many deaf people now achieving higher levels of employment and working in a variety of fields, it is equally important that interpreters are appropriately qualified to match the needs of deaf consumers.
Additionally, Deaf Australia believes that best outcomes for deaf children are gained through effective education at the earliest possible stages. ASLIA shares same goal, and advocates that for deaf children to receive effective education, their educational interpreters must be appropriately qualified in order for them to give an appropriate level of access to early intervention and education during this crucial development stage.
Deaf Australia also wishes to convey appreciation for the hard work and dedication of outgoing president, Mr. Paul Heuston and for his strong leadership and direction in moving ASLIA forward.
Maree, along with several new executive committee members, was elected at the recent ASLIA conference in Perth. The event was very successful, with close to 150 delegates, including interpreters, service providers, aspiring interpreters and members of the deaf community.
We look forward working closely with Dr Maree Madden and ASLIA in continuing our work for quality interpreters.
