Update from DA board member Kai regarding WFD 2027 Congress location

Transcript

On 12th July, following the completion of the 2023 WFD Congress in South Korea, Deaf Australia would like to provide you with a follow-up update regarding the outcomes arising from the video released about the winning bid for the UAE to host the next WFD Congress in 2027.

Deaf Australia, along with 21 other countries, submitted a motion to call for an EGA (Extraordinary General Assembly) to address concerns related to the upcoming congress. The intention behind this motion is not to withdraw the hosting rights from the UAE but rather to ensure that no discrimination towards LGBTIQA+ people occur, and that freedom of speech is safeguarded during the event.

WFD has formally sent through an acknowledgement and receipt of this motion and has informed their members that the motion has been added to their next Board meeting agenda. We do not know when this board meeting is, but the Board has announced that they will provide updates to us in August about how they plan to proceed with the hosting of the EGA.

Normally, at the closing ceremony of the WFD Congress, the flag is handed over to the next hosting country. However, this did not happen, and we, Australia, are not happy about this. We think that the flag presentation should have happened, and normal processes should have happened while these issues were being resolved.

We are aware of another motion from 21 other countries who oppose the motion for an EGA. Their motion includes very valid points about not creating a divide between Deaf people and communities, and the democracy processes being upheld; and stresses the importance of respecting diverse customs, laws and values across different nations. We agree with these points, however we want to ensure that ALL Deaf people, whatever their identity is, can participate freely and as little or much as they want to.

When we receive more information, we will update you. Thank you.

Deaf Australia are coming to Brisbane for NDIS Review sessions

Transcript

Hello, my name is Julie Lyons (sign name), and I'm a Deaf Australia Board member. I'm creating this vlog to discuss upcoming events that you may have already seen Deaf Australia promoting. We'll be in Brisbane this Friday, August 11th, from 5pm to 8pm. This will be a valuable opportunity to engage in conversations about Deaf Australia's accomplishments, future plans, and the constitution consultation. It's truly worth your while to attend and participate in these important discussions. Everyone is welcome to join.

On the following day, Saturday, August 12th, there will be an NDIS review meeting from 9:30am to 1pm. So you can share your feedback and opinions on the effectiveness of the NDIS system. Your input matters to help improve NDIS. You will get paid for your time.

Also on the same Saturday, at 2pm to 5pm, we will be holding an NDIS youth review. This is important for individuals under 25 years old, and parents of young individuals are also encouraged to attend. You will get paid for your time too.

RSVP is mandatory ASAP so that Deaf Australia can prepare for the events. This includes catering arrangements. The events will take place at the Deaf Connect Community Centre. Please feel free to reach out to Deaf Australia's CEO, Jen, myself, or DCCQ.

We look forward to seeing you there. Goodbye.

Hello, I'm River, and I will be hosting the Youth NDIS review. This review is for young Deaf individuals aged between 13 to 25 years old. Parents are welcome to accompany those who are between 13 to 18 years old if they want some support.

The NDIS review is scheduled for this Saturday, August 12th, from 1pm to 4pm. [DA Note: the workshop will be from 2pm to 5pm not 1pm to 4pm.] Please refer to the provided text for the location address. This event is an opportunity for youthsto share their feedback and opinions on what is and isn't working within the NDIS system.

The discussions during the workshop will be kept completely confidential. The NDIS will not have access to participants' names, except for those present including DA staff and myself during the event. There will be two interpreters to voice the discussions, and the session will be recorded.

Hope to see you there and not to miss out on this exciting opportunity.

Deaf Australia are coming to Perth for NDIS Review sessions

General video from Board Member Susan

Transcript

Hi WA Deaf community,

Today, I am wearing my Deaf Australia Board hat, and I want to inform you about four upcoming meetings. Deaf Australia is the national peak advocacy organisation representing Deaf people in Australia. Our CEO, Jen Blyth, will be flying to Perth to meet with Deaf individuals here in WA.

There will be four meetings scheduled for the weekend after this one. Hope you all can be involved please. On Friday night, August 4th, we will have the NDIS review meeting for youth. The purpose of this meeting is to share your experiences with NDIS, including your parents' involvement prior to getting the NDIS. Whether you are now independent or have any positive or negative feedback, we would like to hear from you. Jack Klem will be facilitating this meeting.

On Saturday morning, August 5th, at the Osborne Park Bowling Club, we will have the general NDIS review meeting for Deaf adults. This meeting will provide you with an opportunity to share your positive and negative feedback, among other things. The session will run from 9 am to 11:30 am, and we hope to involve a maximum of 15 people. Please see the text below for more information and to reserve your spot.

The last two meetings will take place on Saturday afternoon at the Herdsman Tavern at Lake Monger, next to the old Access Plus WA office. These meetings will focus on discussing Deaf Australia's constitution, making necessary updates and changes based on your feedback. The fourth meeting will be a community consultation to collect your ideas, feedback, and experiences so that Deaf Australia can advocate effectively for all Deaf people in Australia. You will have the opportunity to ask questions to Jen for more information. I truly hope that all of you can attend. I would love to meet you all and introduce you to Jen. I hope that WA will take the initiative to support what's happening nationally.

For more information, please feel free to contact me. In case I haven't introduced myself, my name is Susan Bates, and my sign name is SB. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Goodbye.
