Welcome to Deaf Australia's Accessibility & Inclusion Toolkit
Transcript
Welcome to Accessibility and Inclusion Toolkit.
What is in the toolkit?
The toolkit is made up of two parts:
1) Develop ‘Access and Inclusion’ initiatives that the public and private sectors can use on their services and products to ensure that they are accessible to Auslan Deaf users and other deaf people in Australia, which will be backed up by Deaf-led census data collected by researchers.
This is a world first, Deaf-led Census with an amazing study completed, collected data from 846 deaf/deafblind/deaf disabled/hard of hearing people and 369 hearing people. Which means a total of 1215 people. This census focused on 3 main areas: education, employment and health.
Information from this census is available through this Toolkit for Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing people and their families and friends for advocacy purposes. We would like to do this Census again, every 5 years, while updating how we do this and the questions involved, but this is funding dependent.
2) Create and distribute the toolkit – inform people to understand who Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing Auslan people are and what are their requirements. The purpose of the toolkit is to benefit both deaf and hearing people to make their daily lives much more accessible and equitable for all.
Note: this project was made possible with funding from DSS (ILC – Social and Community Participation (SCP)).
Finally, I want to recognise all the people involved:
• Darlene Thornton
• Dr Gabrielle Hodge
• Lee Murray
• SA Senior Group (who did a lot of work in printing this out and mailing them in!)
• Everyone else who did the census online
Thank you. Hope you find the toolkit very useful.
